Max has a diverse background having practiced law for Miller Nash LLP, served as an elected official to the Oregon Legislature for three terms, led the Oregon Department of Corrections for eight years, and served as the President and CEO of The Oregon Community Foundation for more than 13 years.
His career has been dedicated to building relationships across stakeholders to address significant statewide and community challenges in many sectors of Oregon. Max has worked with clients, constituents, wealthy donors and powerful citizens, nonprofit leaders, adults in custody, teachers, farmworkers, lawmakers, and families in almost any imaginable circumstance. Under his leadership the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) grew from $1.2B to $3.7B in total assets by leveraging partnerships, creating new funding streams, and building trust-based coalitions with other funders and partners to more than double the total grantmaking.
His community connections and passion to use his unique skill set and systematic approach to leadership and strategy make him an excellent addition for the Portland Advisory Board.
