From Basketball to Banking

The same work ethic that got Maarty Leunen and the Oregon Ducks to the NCAA Elite Eight has been a winning strategy in banking.

Maarty Leunen is dedicated to building connections and long-term relationships with prospective and current clients. His hard work, loyalty, and honest approach have earned Maarty the reputation of a trusted business advisor. A native of Central Oregon, Maarty graduated from Redmond High School after winning a State Championship in basketball. He went on to play basketball at the University of Oregon for four years. As a starter, Maarty helped the Ducks to reach the Elite Eight. After graduating from the University of Oregon with an Economics Degree, he was drafted by the Houston Rockets. Soon after, he embarked on a successful 13-year professional basketball career in Turkey, Germany, and Italy. Maarty is a strong supporter of the local community, having created the Maarty Leunen basketball camp, which he has managed for years, and starting the Annual Maarty Leunen Desert Rose Golf Fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Redmond.

Q. Tell us a story about a positive experience you had with a client.

My positive experiences are more on the front end. As a market development professional at the bank, one of my key responsibilities is actively seeking out potential clients and engaging with them to understand their financial needs. During these conversations, I pay close attention to any pain points or challenges they may face, as this information can help me identify the right solutions. Once I have a good grasp of their requirements, I leverage my network of colleagues to connect them with someone with the expertise to provide valuable advice. Depending on the client’s specific needs, this could be anyone from a relationship manager to a product specialist. By doing this, I ensure that our clients receive the best possible guidance and support while also building stronger relationships with them. This approach has proven effective in driving business growth and enhancing our reputation as a trusted financial partner.

Q. Tell us about your banking experience

I have only been in the banking industry for two and a half years since joining Summit, despite having yet to gain prior experience. I was entrusted by our Market President, Gary O’Connell. I hold a degree in Economics from the University of Oregon. Still, my knowledge and banking skills have been acquired through my learning experience with the Summit team and “sipping from the firehose.”

Q. What do you like most about the market where you live and work

I love how Central Oregon has a lively and growth-minded business community that values innovation, cooperation, and a robust entrepreneurial mindset. We are fortunate because the area’s quality of life and beautiful natural surroundings have been instrumental in attracting entrepreneurs and professionals to the region, which has bolstered Central Oregon’s economy and will continue to make it an attractive place to live, work, and enjoy.

Q. What do you love most about banking?

Through my short banking career and my position in market development, I have enjoyed building relationships with business owners and people throughout the community. I love being a resource for people looking to improve their banking solutions or help grow their businesses.

Q. What sets Summit Bank apart from other financial institutions?

What sets Summit Bank apart is our hands-on, personal approach. We pick up our phones, know our clients, make all decisions on time and within our office, and keep all our deposits local to help improve the community.

Q. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is the variability it offers. No two days are the same. I find excitement in facing new challenges, continuously learning and growing, interacting with different people, and having the opportunity to make a positive impact. Embracing this variability adds excitement and fulfillment to my job, keeping me motivated and energized.

Q. What else might you do for a living if you weren’t in banking?

I would be coaching college basketball. After my 13-year professional playing career, I had some opportunities to coach, but I decided to go a different direction.

Q. While not at work, where might we find you?

You will find me at one of my four kids’ sporting events or practices. I have enjoyed coaching, supporting, and cheering on my kids.
